The "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" was a breakthrough work thanks in large part to the Upshaw/Zinman recording on the Elektra Nonesuch label. While I feel the Upshaw/Zinman is an important recording, it's nowhere near as authoritative as this Antoni Wit performance on Naxos. I didn't really feel the pain or sorrow in the Upshaw/Zinman performance.
The Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style and "represented a stylistic breakthrough: austerely plaintive, emotionally direct and steeped in medieval modes.
Though the symphony initially received a mixed response when it premiered in 1976 because it departed from the atonal avant-garde style of Górecki's previous work, it ultimately became one of the most popular classical works in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs was played in the very first week that the station began broadcasting in September 1992 and the audience response was so great that it quickly raced to the top of the classical music charts
The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs was played in the very first week that the station began broadcasting in September 1992 and the audience response was so great that it quickly raced to the top of the classical music charts. Górecki was almost totally unknown outside classical music circles, so in that respect the symphony was a slightly unusual selection. But it captured the British public’s imagination, remaining the country’s most popular classical CD for months
