Berenice (HWV 38) is an opera in three acts by George Frideric Handel to a 1709 Antonio Salvi libretto, Berenice, regina d’Egitto, or Berenice, Queen of Egypt. Handel began the music in December 1736; the premiere took place at Covent Garden Theatre.

Berenice (HWV 38) is an opera in three acts by George Frideric Handel to a 1709 Antonio Salvi libretto, Berenice, regina d’Egitto, or Berenice, Queen of Egypt. Handel began the music in December 1736; the premiere took place at Covent Garden Theatre in London on 18 May 1737 - but was unsuccessful, with just three further performances. Berenice traces the life of Berenice III of Egypt, daughter of Ptolemy IX, the main character in another Handel opera, Tolomeo.

Conductor: Rudolph Palmer. Composer: George Frideric Handel. A special chapter of these recordings is the orchestral part played on period instruments by the Brewer Chamber Orchestra conducted by Rudolph Palmer. Audio CD (May 27, 2003). According to the sleeve-note, there were twenty-eight players in the string section in this recording (except that only a not doubled oboe, a bassoon and a harpsichord were added to the orchestra), but the real sound that we hear is very subtle.

Penny Gore presents a performance of Handel's opera Berenice, Queen of Egypt, with Rudolph Palmer conducting the Brewer Chamber Orchestra in a recording from 1994. As part of BBC Radio 3's complete cycle of Handel's operas, Penny Gore presents a performance of Berenice, Queen of Egypt, with Rudolph Palmer conducting the Brewer Chamber Orchestra in a recording from 1994. The work plays revenge and conflict against love in a Roman-controlled Egypt, where Queen Berenice of Egypt is told by the senate in Rome to marry a young Roman, Alessandro, instead of her intended, the rival Egyptian Prince Demetrio.

Act I Queen Berenice attends the Roman ambassador Fabio. Fabio informs her that the Senate wishes her to wed the young Roman noble Alessandro who accompanies him. But Berenice is betrothed to Prince Demetrio, and refuses to be instructed in this matter; Alessandro is instantly smitten. Yet he refuses to press Rome’s suit on his own behalf, declaring that Berenice must offer him her hand herself. Prince Demetrio actually loves Selene, the Queen’s sister.

Handel’s Berenice is no relation to the heroine of Racine’s tragedy, but the daughter of the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy IX, the title character of an earlier Handel opera, Tolomeo. This late work was one of the biggest flops of the composer’s career, mustering only three or four performances and never again revived. As always in any mature Handel work, there are plums, including a gorgeous C sharp minor aria for the titular queen that Handel cut before the premiere, but Curtis restores.

oli/Il Complesso Barocco/Curtis (Virgin Classics, 3 CDs). Berenice dates from 1737, a disastrous year in Handel's life, that saw both the financial collapse of his opera company in Covent Garden and the impairment of his health after a stroke. Berenice itself was a failure, closing after only four performances in its opening run, and Handelians have argued about its merits ever since. You're conscious of occasional lapses in inspiration, certainly, but the score is also characterised by an unusual darkness of tone. Set in Ptolemaic Egypt, the opera deals with the relationship between sex and politics.

    La Trama
Atto I. La regina d'Egitto Berenice incontra l'ambasciatore romano Fabio.
