Steven Siro Vai (born June 6, 1960) is an American guitarist, songwriter and producer who has sold over 15 million albums. After starting his career as a music transcriptionist for Frank Zappa, Vai recorded and toured in Zappa's band for two years, from 1980 to 1982. He began a solo career in 1983, has released eight solo albums and won three Grammy Awards. He has also recorded and toured with Public Image Ltd., Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Vai has been a regular touring member of the G3 Concert Tour which began in 1996. In 1999 Vai started his own record label Favored Nations, intending to showcase as he describes, "...artists that have attained the highest performance level on their chosen instruments."
Vai plans to release his next solo album ‘The Story of Light’ August 14, featuring 10 melodic instrumentals and two songs featuring female vocalists. The project is the second part of a operatic trilogy, which will include lyrics and narration. According to a press release, ‘The Story of Light’ “follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.” Part one of the trilogy was the 2005 album ‘Real Illusions: Reflections,’ and part three will come at a later date.
“I’m always pursuing knowledge, I’m a seeker of spiritual equilibrium — and music is a big part of that,” the guitarist says. “I’ve been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.”
Aimee Mann sings on a the track ‘No More Amsterdam,’ and season one ‘The Voice’ finalist Beverly McClellan is featured on ‘John the Revelator,’ a track inspired by Blind Willie Johnson, who also makes a postmortem appearance.
